Biographical History
The microfilms were obtained by Mother M. Shanahan, R.S.C.J., for her article on Henry Gregory, English Bendictine, published in the R.A.H.S. Journal, December 1966.
Downside Abbey was and is a Benedictine house founded in Somerset, England in the late 1700s. It supplied some priests for Australia, the first Benedictine appointee being William Ullathorne who arrived in 1833, the second being John Bede Polding, chosen as Australia's first Catholic bishop in 1834.
