Biographical History

Family of bankers and merchants established in Florence at the end of the 12th century. Partisans of the Guelph faction, the Guadagni held high public offices in the republic, and were sent into exile when the Medici came to power. Some of them settled as merchants in Marseilles, France. Filippo made pace with the Medici, and his son, Alessandro, returned to Florence with the intercession of Catherine de' Medici, Queen of France. In 1596 he was made senator by the Grand Duke Ferdinando I, and built the palazzo through an inheritance from an uncle in Marseilles. The Guadagni were included in the list of Tuscan nobility in 1752.
