Biographical History

James T. Stewart (b. 1921, St. Louis, Mo.-d. Sept. 3, 1990), U.S. Air Force officer, enlisted as an aviation cadet in 1941 and received his commission and pilot wings in 1942. Early in his career he was assigned to the 116th Observation Squadron, flying West Coast patrol missions, and served as an instructor pilot. Later in World War II, he was commander, 508th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group. In the last two years of the War he completed two combat tours of bombing missions against Nazi-held Europe. After completing his university degree in aeronautical engineering, he was assigned to the Air Proving Ground Command, and in 1952 was posted to the Far East Air Forces HQ in Tokyo, Japan. Following a number of assignments in the field of research and development, he became director of science and technology at Air Force HQ in 1963. The next year he was designated director, Office of Space Systems, in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. In 1970, General Stewart became commander, Aeronautical Systems Division, Air Force Systems Command. He retired in 1976.
