Biographical History

Alfred Corey Howell was a banker and member of the Grolier Club (a New York bibliophile society). Among his friends was the book designer and fellow club member Frederic Warde (1894-1939). During his career Warde was associated with the Princeton University Press, the Printing House of William Edwin Rudge, the Oxford University Press and several private ventures. He is also associated with the design of the Arrighi typeface. As.

The unofficial executor of Warde's estate, Howell corresponded with friends and relatives immediately after his death on 31 July 1939. Over the next fifteen years he continued to gather information about Warde and unsuccessfully attempted to realize the publication of a memorial volume and an exhibition. (A small exhibition on Warde's work was held at the Grolier Club in 1985.).
