Biographical History
The Marshallton Iron and Steel Company was incorporated in Delaware in 1889. It was a small-scale fabricator of iron and steel pipe and sheet metal. The business closed in 1906.
The company's earliest antecedent was the rolling mill built by John Marshall in 1836 on Red Clay Creek northwest of Newport, Del. It was operated by John Marshall alone (1836-1838), John and Caleb Marshall (1838-1862), John Marshall and Edward Mendenhall (1862-1869), John and Calvin Marshall (1869-1871), and Calvin Marshall and John and Joseph Richardson (1871-1874). In 1874 John R. Bringhurst acquired a one-quarter interest, and in 1877 he obtained complete control of the property. Bringhurst incorporated the works as the Marshallton Iron and Steel Company in 1889. The firm continued to be controlled by the Bringhurst family.
