Biographical History
American author and historian.
Northwestern University physiologist and historian of the American West.
Born August 11, 1910, John S. Gray was educated at Knox College (B.S. 1932) and Northwestern University (M.S., Ph. D., and M.D. degrees). He spent his entire career (1936-1974) at Northwestern, and began researching the western history at the suggestion of Ray Billington when administrative duties precluded biomedical research. A frequent contributor of articles to the Brand Book of the Chicago Corral of Westerners, Gray also wrote two books: Centennial campaign: the Sioux War of 1876 (1976); and Custer's last campaign: Mitch Boyer and the Little Bighorn reconstructed (1991). After his retirement Gray moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he died on December 25, 1991.
