Biographical History

Thomas Hunt was born in Perth, Perthshire, in 1855. His father, Colin Hunt, was a merchant. Thomas studied medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1874-1880 and graduated with an MB CM in 1878 and a MD in 1880 for his dissertation Is not Prevention better than Cure. After completing his terms as Medical Officer at Carlisle Dispensary and Carlisle Fever Hospital, Thomas worked as a Clinical Assistant at the Central London Hospital for Diseases of the Throat and Ear from 1880-1882 . He then worked briefly as a surgeon with the British India Company and the Government Transport Service, before setting up practice in Kinnoul, Perthshire, from 1883-1887 . In 1888 he moved to Heywood, Manchester, and in 1890 , he was appointed Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator at the Bury Union workhouse in Heap, Lancashire, a position which he held until his retirement in 1920. Thomas died in Bamford, Rochdale, on 5 November 1929 .
