Biographical History
The Kansas Emergency Relief Committee was created in 1932 by executive order under the name of the Kansas Federal Relief Committee. This Committee consisted of twelve members appointed by the Governor to assist in transacting business between the state and federal governments. Originally the Federal Relief Committee functioned primarily as the State Civil Works Administration and the County Relief Administrations as County Civil Works Administrations. All Civil Works Administration employees were employed by the federal government, and the program was federally administered. This committee continued as the Emergency Relief Committee under Governor Landon. It was abolished by the legislature in 1937 and its records, funds, and property transferred to the State Department of Social Welfare. [Wilder, Bessie. Governmental Agencies of the State of Kansas, 1861-1956. Lawrence: University of Kansas Publications, 1957.]
