Biographical History

Frederic Chapin Lane was a professor of history at The Johns Hopkins University.

He was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1900. His family soon moved to Massachusetts when his father accepted a position at Tufts University. He earned his B.A. at Cornell, received his M.A. from Tufts, and the Ph. D. from Harvard. In 1928, he joined the history faculty at The Johns Hopkins University. He taught at Hopkins for 38 years. During his academic career, he served as the president of the American Historical Association, the Economic History Association, and the Society for Italian Historical Studies. He retired from the University in May, 1966, and was appointed professor emeritus. Lane died on October 14, 1984, in Westminister, Massachusetts. He was survived by his daughter, Alfreda Altobellim, and two sons, Goerge M. and Jonathan P. Lane.
