Biographical History
John Grossman was a homesteader in Fort St. John, B.C., arriving in 1930.
John Grossman was a graphic artist living in California when he began to collect ephemera. He was attracted by the colorful images produced by chromolithography.
John Grossman was born in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1932. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art. After service in the military, he became a commercial artist in San Francisco. He taught lettering and design at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1960-1966. He also painted in oils, focusing on landscapes. John was appointed to the California Arts Commission by Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1967, serving as vice chairman and then as chairman from 1969-1972. In l974, a chance visit to an antique shop inspired John to begin collecting ephemera, including postcards, labels, trade cards, valentines, and so much more. In 1985, John and his wife, Carolyn, established The Gifted Line, a giftware and licensing company that offered products in the marketplace designed from images from his collection. They operated the business until 1998. John Grossman has published several books and articles. Carolyn Grossman is a watercolor artist and a graphic designer.
