Biographical History

Journalist and author. Janet Hawley, a senior feature writer with the Good Weekend, completed an arts degree at Sydney University, and began her journalism career at the Daily Telegraph. After her cadetship Hawley moved to The Australian, where she was intrinsic in developing "page three profiles". Hawley then joined The Age, and as feature-writer-at-large, she has travelled throughout Australia and overseas covering a range of topics including Indonesian politics and society, the Arab-Israeli conflict, Aboriginal culture, environmental issues, royal tours and sport. Hawley has won many major awards for her arts features and profiles, including two Walkleys and the Gold Walkley, and her medical stories have also won several major awards. Her published works include Encounters with Australian artists (1993) and A place on the coast (with Philip Cox, 1997).
