Biographical History

The Council of Safety was organized in 1775. It met regularly once a week or more often if needed. It acted as an executive committee when the Provincial Congress was not in session. Its members were elected by the general provincial committee or the Provincial Congress as needed. The Council of Safety directed military activities, undertook Indian negotiations, issued monies and provided for expenditures. It also oversaw the publication of the newspaper. The Council could propose measures and advise delegates to the Continental Congress. It ceased to function with the adoption of the Constitution of 1777.
