Barbara Rodé was an artist born in Russia in 1889 and died in Vernon, BC, Canada in 1969. She married Leonide Zouzouline, lived for a time in Odessa, St. Petersburg, Paris, Brussels, and Nelson, British Columbia. Her work consisted of oil painting and book illustration. While living in Paris, she was encouraged to illustrate works of Marcel Proust. Twenty-seven of her illustations of Un amour de Swann by Proust were exhibited at the Stock Publishing House Gallery and were admired by André Malraux. He introduced her to graphic artist Edmond Riga who taught her the technique of etching. She then began to engrave her own illustrations. The drypoints for Un amour de Swann were published as a suite by Edmond Riga in 1931. [For additional biographical information, see the website of the Grand Forks Art Gallery].
