Biographical History
The Bicentennial of Princeton's Founding on October 22, 1746 was celebrated in a year-long series of events in 1946-1947. The celebration began in September with a sermon in the University Chapel by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and ended with an address by President Truman in front of Nassau Hall at convocation in June. The intervening months witnessed two additional convocations, sixteen conferences, the conferral of a hundred honorary degrees by President Dodds, and in a single weekend in June the dedication of Dillon Gymnasium, a concert by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the laying of the cornerstone of Firestone Library. The planning of the Bicentennial Celebration was a massive undertaking, involving multiple committees composed of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administration, and alumni.
