Biographical History
Terence O'Donnell was born in Portland, Oregon in 1924. He received his Ph.D from the University of Chicago in 1950. He studied modern history at Trinity College in Dublin from 1954 to 1956. After a year of work in Germany, he lived in Iran for 14 years. Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz were the centers of his employment as an English teacher, Fulbright lecturer, Peace Corps instructor and farmer. Articles and stories about his experiences appeared in several American periodicals, and in 1980 his book "The Garden of the Brave in War," based on his Persian journals, was published. Upon his return to Oregon, O'Donnell became adjunct professor of Persian studies at Portland State University (1971-1990), and researcher and writer at the Oregon Historical Society (1972-1989). The Society's Press published several of his works on Oregon history, including "That Balance so Rare: The Story of Oregon", and "An Arrow in the Earth: General Joel Palmer and the Indians of Oregon."
Author, story teller, and historian Terrence O'Donnell was a native of Portland, Oregon who worked as a research associate for the Oregon Historical Society in his later life. His books include: "Portland, garden of the brave in war," and "An arrow in the earth : General Joel Palmer and the Oregon Indians."
