A nonprofit organizations representing a diverse group of professional communicators dedicated to sharing the outdoor experience.
The Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) was formed April 9th, 1927 at the fifth annual convention of the Isaac Walton League of America by journalists Morris Ackerman, Peter P. Carney, Cal Johnson, Buell A. Patterson, Jack Miner and Mrs. Hal Kane. OWAA is a nonprofit, international organization that represents a diverse group of professional communicators dedicated to sharing the outdoor experience. They inform the public about outdoor activities, issues and the responsible use of our natural resources. The OWAA national headquarters is located in Missoula, Montana. J. Hammond Brown, outdoor editor of the Baltimore News-Post, began the organization’s newsletter in April 1940.
