Administrative History

The Southeastern Arts, Media and Education (SAME) project, 1985-1996, was a multidisciplinary Atlanta based gay and lesbian nonprofit arts organization whose mission was to utilize arts for social change. During its first ten years, 1985-1995, SAME produced over 70 plays, original film and video works, including Promise of Life, a documentary on people living with AIDS, and published Amethyst, a semi-annual journal of creative writing and visual arts. SAME, along with Southern Voice newspaper, co-produced the Southeastern Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which screened over 50 films in 1994, a major event for the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian community. SAME also organized numerous visual arts exhibitions and an annual arts and crafts festival.
