Biographical History

Stanley Herbert Karesh was born October 30, 1921 in Fall River, MA to Alex and Leslie Elinor Feinberg Karesh. A life-long resident of Charleston, SC, Dr. Karesh graduated from Charleston High School in 1938. He attended a two-year pre-dental program at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery before enrolling in the graduate degree program at BCDS from which he graduated in 1943 with a degree in dental surgery. In December 1941, Dr. Karesh joined the U.S. Naval Reserves; in November 1943, he was commissioned as a Lt. Junior Grade in the Dental Corps. His first active duty post was Sampson US Naval Training Base in Sampson, NY. He went to sea in December 1945, serving on a military transport ship to Guam and Saipan. In March 1946, he went on terminal leave and was discharged from service in June 1946. Following his service in the military, Dr. Karesh returned with his family to Charleston where he entered into private practice. In 1970 he joined the faculty of the College of Dental Medicine at MUSC, where he was a part-time clinical associate in the crown and bridge department. In 1971, he was appointed to the search committee for the recruitment of the second dean of the Dental School, Dr. John J. Sharry. In 1972, Dr. Karesh returned to private practice full time. He was active in the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration, having served as editor of its newsletter, Communicator, and later as president in 1979. He was elected to the International College of Dentists in 1971. In 1991 he sold his practice and retired. Dr. Karesh was active in the American Cancer Society of Charleston, serving one term as president. He is also a life member of the Board of Advisors for the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston. On June 3, 1945 he married Charlot Elaine Marks of Greensboro, NC. They have three daughters and four grandchildren.
