Major, United States Army.
Andrew Summers Rowan (1857-1943), American army officer. As a lieutenant, at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in 1898 was sent to talk with Cuban revolutionary leader General Garcia y Inigues to learn the strength of the revolutionary army. He left Washington April 8 on his secret mission and returned May 14, 1898. His exploit was made famous in an 1899 article by Elbert Hubbard, "A Message to Garcia." In 1923 Rowan wrote his own account of "How I Carried the Message to Garcia."
