Biographical History
Frederick Pease Harlow was born Dec. 12 1856, the youngest of six children of Methodist minister William Thompson Harlow and his wife Frances Ann Winsor. He shipped on the AKBAR and was gone two years on a trip to Australia, an experience that would be the basis for "The Making of a Sailor" and would contribute to "Chanteying Aboard American Ships". He spent time working for railroad companies in the west and eventually became an express agent for Northern Pacific Express Co. He worked for the Occidental Fish Company in Seattle, and the Puget Sound Navigation Co. He built four models of the vessels AKBAR, CONQUEST, GLORY OF THE SEAS, and GREAT ADMIRAL and later in life traveled extensively around the world. F.P. Harlow died on September 10, 1952, a couple of months before his 96th birthday.
