He graduated from Yale College in 1799, taught in Hebron and Saybrook, Connecticut, and studied theology at Somers with Rev. Dr. Backus. After his ordination in 1801, Chapman preached in Ohio's Western Reserve from 1801 to 1803, and then across upstate New York and Connecticut from 1804 until his death in 1866. Chapman married Palmyra Adams in Ontario County, New York, in April 1804, and the couple had five children. After his wife's death in 1826, Chapman moved to Oneida Lake in Madison County, New York, to continue his religious work.
