Draper, William H. (William Henry), 1894-1974

William Henry Draper (1894-1974) was born in New York City. He received a B.A. from New York University in 1916 and an M.A. in 1917. During World War I, he commissioned in the infantry as a member of the Officers Reserve Corps and served as a battalion commander at Camp Upton, New York. From 1919 to 1940, he worked as an investment banker in New York City. He was vice president of Dillon Read and Company when the army called him to active duty in 1940. He served at Camp Clipper and then Camp Forest until 1943. From 1943 to 1944, he was commanding officer of the 136th Infantry Regiment in the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1944 he became the head of the contract termination division at the War Department. After achieving the rank of brigadier general in January 1945, he headed the economic division of the Control Council for Germany. He developed the "Draper Plan," designed to reinvigorate Germany industry. In 1947 he made major general and became under secretary of the army, a position he held until February 1949. From 1952 to 1953, Draper was a permanent U.S. representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Council. His decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal and two Legions of Merit.

William Draper (1807-1886) was born in what is now Ontario, Canada. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1833, and traveled with the Mormons to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1834. He worked on the Kirtland Temple and was appointed to the Presidency of the Priests Quorums. In 1838 he moved to Illinois and then Far West, Missouri. He served as president of the Log Creek Branch, but in 1839 departed Missouri and returned to Illinois. In 1846 he accompanied the Mormons to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and in 1849 continued on to Salt Lake City. Draper ultimately married seven plural wives.
