Biographical History
Founded in September 1935 as a reaction to fascist Italy's invasion of Abyssinia to influence public opinion internationally and to organize popular support for the peace keeping tasks of the League of Nations by coordinating relevant activities of groups and individuals from communist to conservative, atheist to religious, etc.; initiated in public by the British conservative Robert Viscount Cecil of Chelwood and the French radical socialist deputy and later Minister of the Popular Front Government Pierre Cot; supported by the COMINTERN as compatible with its popular front policy; its most spectacular effort was the Brussels International Peace Congress in 1936; the Second World War terminated its existence, except for the Swiss branch.
Founded Sept. 1935 by Robert Cecil (Viscount Cecil of Chelwood), a British parliamentarian, and Pierre Cot, a French politician; French language materials use the French version of the name: Rassemblement universel pour la paix; sought to mobilize public opinion in favor of peace, disarmament, and the League of Nations; had more than 40 National Committees; International Secretariat was located in Brussels, Belgium in 1936, moved to Geneva, Switzerland by 1937; appears to have disbanded during World War II.
