From the guide to the Mackenzie, Sir Edward Montague Compton, 1911-1931, (Senate House Library, University of London)

Compton Mackenzie was one of the most prolific British authors of the 20th century. Born into a talented, privileged family of actors and authors, he had a charmed and precocious childhood. After a notable tenure at Oxford, he decided to become a writer, producing poems and popular novels and, later, essays and other non-fiction. His style and themes were remarkably diverse, and his works range from light entertainments to genuine literary efforts. Due to his extravagant lifestyle, he wrote to make money, and many of his over one hundred books were written in haste for cash. He also served in the Secret Service in World War I, and was a pioneering radio personality.
