Biographical History
Bazaine was commander-in-chief of the French Expeditionary Corps of Mexico from 1863 to 1867.
Military leader. Born 1811 in Versailles, France; died 1888 in Madrid, Spain. Began military career in Africa (1831). As member of French Foreign Legion, fought Carlistas in Spain (1835-1837) and received the Cross of the Legion of Honor. Served with distinction in the siege of Sebastopol and the Italian campaign. Appointed commander of the first division of the French Expeditionary Force in Mexico (1862); elevated to Commander-in-Chief in 1863. Served as acting head of Mexican government until the arrival of Maximilian in 1864. Named Marshal of France; occupied Guadalajara (1864). Accepted surrender of General Porfirio Díaz at Oaxaca (1865). Ordered to withdraw French forces from Mexico (1867). Appointed Commander of the French Imperial Guard (1869). As Commander of the Army of the Rhine in the Franco-Prussian War, Bazaine surrendered to the Prussians at Metz (1870) and was accused of high treason, imprisoned, and condemned to death (1871-1872). His sentence having been commuted to imprisonment on the island of Sainte Marguerite, he escaped in 1874 to Madrid, where he ended his days in poverty.
