Biographical History

The Department of Politics at Princeton University emerged in 1924, splitting away from the former Department of History and Politics. The Department's first chairman, professor Edward S. Corwin, was the first in a long line of faculty members who were internationally recognized figures in the field of political science. In the 1930s the curriculum offered by the Department was expanded to include domestic and international public affairs. The course of study shifted again in the 1950s to a more quantitative and comparative approach, reflecting trends in the field. Today the Department of Politics offers undergraduate degrees as well as a Ph.D., and boasts a faculty that includes nearly 60 scholars whose research represents virtually all major approaches to political science and whose interests span the full breadth of the discipline.
