Emily Smith York was the daughter of Henry A. Smith, a bookseller from Rome, Georgia, and Josephine Noble Smith, daughter of James Noble, who built the Noble Brothers Iron Works at Rome, Georgia, the Cornwall iron works in Cherokee County, Alabama, and the Woodstock iron works, around which Anniston, Alabama, developed.
