Physician.
Thomas L. Barnes was born in North Carolina in 1812. He served as a medical officer during the Black Hawk War and was a member of the Carthage Grays that guarded Joseph Smith when he was imprisoned at Carthage, Illinois. Barnes was also said to have performed Smith's autopsy. In 1854 Barnes traveled briefly to Salt Lake City, where he escaped an attack by Mormons who remembered his involvement with the Carthage Grays, before continuing to California. He settled in Ukiah, California, where he died in 1901.
Barnes was a physician in Carthage, Illinois at the time the Smith brothers were murdered in the jail.
