Biographical History

Biographical Note: Gerhard H. Dieke was an authority on spectroscopy and solid state physics and a professor of physics, The Johns Hopkins University.

He was born in Rheda, Germany in 1901. He studed at the University of Leiden and received a Ph. D. in physics, the University of California in 1926. Dr. Dieke joined the Physics Department at Hopkins in 1930, and served as chairman of the department, 1950-1965. He was recognized at one of the pioneers in investigating the structure of atoms and molecules by spectroscopic methods. Dr. Dieke was married to astronomer, Sally Harrison Dieke (1913-1989), a faculty member at Hopkins (1966-1989). Gerhard H. Dieke died in Scotland, August 26, 1965.
