Biographical History
Jonas Wade was born on September 4, 1757, to James Wade (1730-1774) and Hannah Hinman Wade (1731-1792). A supporter of the patriotic cause during the American Revolution, he served as a private in the Essex County Militia. It was at that time that British troops had destroyed much of his property in Connecticut Farms (now Union, New Jersey), which included 30 bushels of wheat, many articles of clothing, leather, as well as three buildings. The total extent of the damage was appraised at the value of 327 British pounds. Wade was a part of a prominent family descended from Benjamin Wade, a clothier and wealthy landowner in Union Township, New Jersey. Along with his extensive landholdings in his native Union Township, he also possessed properties in the nearby towns of Elizabeth, Springfield, Chatham, and Long Hill. He also owned and operated a paper mill on his property in Union. Wade married Rhoda Headley (1756-1837), the daughter of Samuel Headley. Together, they had ten children: James, Stephen, Phebe, Oliver, Noah, Maria, Harriet, Hannah, Eliza, and Jane. All of the children were born at the family home in Union, New Jersey. Jonas Wade died at the age of 61 on August 9, 1819, in Springfield, New Jersey.
