Biographical History
Born January 14, 1896, in Mouscron, Belgium; died May 9, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois. Historian, researcher, author. Jean Delanglez, S.J., entered the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesuis at Macon, Georgia, on August 31, 1921. He completed his novitiate in 1923 and was sent to Grand Coteau, Louisiana to review his college studies. From 1924 to 1927 he followed the Jesuit program in philosophy courses for a Master of Arts degree at Mount St. Michael's, outside of Spokane, Washington. In 1928 he was sent to Dublin, Ireland, for theological studies at Milltown Park, and was ordained on July 31, 1935. Following his ordination he began his doctoral studies in history at The Catholic University of America, under the direction of Dr. Peter Guilday, where he specialized in colonial French America and the role of the Jesuits during the discovery and settlement of the Mississippi River valley. In 1935 Delanglez was assigned full-time to the Institute of Jesuit History at Loyola University Chicago to continue his research. He passed away on May 9, 1949, at Loyola University Chicago.
