Biographical History
A native of New Jersey, Smith moved to Indiana and studied law. He served in the Indiana General Assembly, was prosecuting attorney for the third judicial district, and later served in the U.S. House and Senate. He founded the town of Yorktown in Delaware County. Smith spent the last years of his life in Indianapolis.
Oliver H. Smith, a native of New Jersey moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana in 1818. He practiced law and served with the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Senate. While in the Senate he served on the Committee on Public Lands. He retired to Indianapolis after he lost a reelection bid for the Senate in 1843. Samuel Milroy was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He moved first to Washington County, Indiana then to Delphi, Carrol County, Indiana. He represented both counties in the state legislature. He later was a land office agent in Crawfordsville and was the Indian agent of the Miami's at the time of his death. Austin W. Morris was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, and moved to Indiana in 1821 where he was a teacher, lawyer, and politician in Marion County. He served in the state legislature from 1835-37 as a member of the Whig party.
