Biographical History

Christian missionary to Japan, interned at Baguio during World War II.

From the description of Darley Downs papers, 1943-1946. (University of Oregon Libraries). WorldCat record id: 18697692

Darley Downs served as a Christian missionary in Japan until August 1941 when he left the country due to restrained relations between Japan and the United States. He went to Mindanao, Philippines, and was eventually interned at Baguio by the Japanese, a common practice with missionaries during World War II. During this time, his wife stayed in Massachusetts as Assistant Secretary of the Foreign Department of the American Board of Missions.

Upon his return to the United States, Downs wrote a thesis on the effects of the war on missions to Japan. Completed in 1946, it helped earn him a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Union Theological Seminary.
