Governor of South Carolina 1852-1854; plantation owner of Sumter County, S.C., and vicinity; member of the General Assembly (in both the S.C. House and the S.C. Senate); Son of S.C. Gov. Richard Irvine Manning (1789-1836) and Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Manning (1794-1873). In 1839, Manning and his wife, Susan Frances Hampton Manning built an elaborate Greek-Revival home in Sumter County, S.C., called Millford [sometimes spelled Milford]

J.L. Manning's middle name also spelled "Laurence" in some sources [although the Library of Congress established his name with spelling of "Lawrence"].
