Biographical History

Georgetown, South Carolina, has the state's second oldest Hebrew community. In the 1700s, Jewish families were pioneers of Georgetown's mercantile community and by 1800 a strong Jewish contingent was established in the area. Over the years, Jewish businesses grew and prospered and tiny shops became thriving operations. During the late 19th century, a wave of Eastern European Jewish immigrants arrived in Georgetown and continued to find success in business, politics, and social assimilation.
