James Laidlaw, British consul, was born January 23, 1847 in Scotland.
James Laidlaw, British consul, was born January 23, 1847 in Scotland. Arriving in America in 1871, Laidlaw was appointed in 1873 to the British Consulate for the district of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Founder and president of the British Benevolent Society, he was heavily involved in charity work throughout his life. Married twice, to Louise Carpenter (d. 1886) and Charlotte Coad Stout, he had seven children. He died on January 5, 1913.
