Biographical History

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Photographic Laboratory provided services to the University community for close to half a century from 1946 to 1990. The Laboratory served as the image reproduction center on campus where offices, schools, departments, and other University-related groups could request images/prints from the vast number of negatives created and maintained by the Laboratory staff. The Laboratory was founded in 1946 as part of the University's newly created Communication Center and was located in Swain Hall. The mission of the Communication Center was to produce programs and audio-visual materials in all media for the University and the state of North Carolina. Subject matter includes faculty, staff, students, facilities, and activities. The Photographic Laboratory closed in 1990.
