Biographical History
Jeremiah Chew: founded settlement of Chews Landing, Gloucester Township, Gloucester (later Camden) County, New Jersey, on north branch of (Big) Timber Creek; referred to in 1748 as a "boatman" and at other times as a yeoman; operated a tavern (and the wharf?) at Chews Landing; died in 1782.
Aaron Chew: born in 1751, the son of Jeremiah Chew; resided at Chews Landing; owned and/or operated the tavern and wharf at Chews Landing for a time?; served as a lieutenant in the local militia during the Revolutionary War (and was imprisoned by the British); divorced his first wife in 1783 and later that year married Hannah (Clark) Gardiner; for an unknown period, subsequently operated a general store at Chews Landing in partnership (Foster and Chew, formed in late 1783) with Josiah Foster of Philadelphia; might have engaged in coastal shipping or the shipping of goods to and from Philadelphia, as he is referred to in 1785 as a Cap[tain] (evidently not a militia title?); served as clerk of Gloucester Township in 1789 (and other years?); died in 1805.
