Biographical History

Robert G. Dunlop was the first non-Pew family member to serve as president of the Sun Company. He was elected to this position in 1947 after having worked for Sun since 1933. Dunlop was trained as an accountant. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1931. When he went to work for Sun he was put in charge of its internal banking functions in order to assure that the company was in compliance with the NRA codes. He became assistant comptroller and then comptroller, working closely with J. Howard Pew on the economic analysis of the Houdry Process, the Temporary National Economic Committee hearings, and wartime allocation of petroleum products. When J. Howard Pew retired, Robert Dunlop became president and chief executive officer of the Sun Company.
