Biographical History

In 1854 the governor-general was relieved of the direct administration of Bengal, which was placed under a lieutenant governor. Thenceforward, the government of India became entirely distinct from that of Bengal. The flourishing indigo industry of Bengal and Bihar was threatened with extinction during the Blue Mutiny (violent riots by cultivators in 1859-1860), but India continued to export indigo to European markets until the end of the 19th century, when synthetic dyes made that natural product obsolete.

From the description of Judicial proceedings concerning indigo [microform], 1854-1894. (Pennsylvania State University Libraries). WorldCat record id: 52198661
