Biographical History

The Crommelin family has long been prominent in the history of Alabama. Charles Crommelin (1800-1857) was born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He moved to Alabama in 1820, locating in Montgomery and Wetumpka. Charles Crommelin graduated from King's College, now Columbia University, in 1818. He was licensed to practice law in Montgomery in 1833 and entered into a partnership with George C. Ball. Their firm, well known in the Montgomery, Mobile, and New York areas and dealt with the collection of debts and payments for individuals and companies. Charles Crommelin also operated a plantation near Wetumpka.

In 1830 Charles married Julia Parthenia Ross and became connected with the Foote, Sledge, Chappell and Abercrombie families of Montgomery. The Crommelins had nine children and their son Henry (1844-1893) and grandson John Gerardt (1873-1945) continued the plantation operation and invested heavily in Mobile and Montgomery properties. John Gerardt and Katherine Vasser Crommelin had three daughters, one of whom married into the prominent Nicrosi family, and five sons who served in the Navy, two dying in World War II: John G., Rear Admiral; Henry, Vice Admiral; Charles (d. 1945), Richard (d. 1945); and Quentin, Commander. The Crommelin family seat is still located in Wetumpka.
