Coursen B. Conklin, Sr., (1884-1952) graduated from George Washington University with a degree in medicine in 1907. In 1909 he began practicing medicine in the District of Columbia and received a M.A. in medicine in 1928. From 1922 to 1938 he served as secretary to the District Medical Society and was a member of numerous other medical organizations, playing key roles in many of them. Conklin also served in the Medical Reserve Corps during World War I reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. Coursen Conklin, Sr., married Mary P. Burroughs in 1920 and the couple had six children. Mary Burroughs was a nurse at Garfield Memorial Hospital.
