1858 Bye-Fellow of Peterhouse and entered the Indian Civil Service; 1859 assistant collector and magistrate, Thana, later Broach, Surat, and Ahmadabad; 1862 assistant judge; 1863 under secretary to the Bombay Government, judicial, political, and educational departments and secretary, the Legislative Council; 1863- fellow of Bombay University; 1866 acting first political assistant, Kathiawar; 1867 acting registrar, the High Court, Bombay; 1868, 1881, 1888 and 1890 Dean of Arts and Syndic, Bombay University; 1871-1880 district judge, Ratnagiri, later Thana and then Surat; 1877 admitted to Lincoln's Inn; 1881-1884 thrice acting judge, the High Court, Bombay; 1881-1885 judicial commissioner and judge of Sadar Court, Sind; 1885-1892 puisne judge, the High Court, Bombay; 1889 called to the Bar, Lincoln’s Inn; 1891-1892 vice-chancellor, Bombay University; 1892-1897 judicial and political member of the executive council of the governor of Bombay; 1893 CSI; 1895 acting governor of the presidency of Bombay; 1897 returned to England; 1901 elected honorary fellow of Peterhouse.
