Biographical History
Charles Augustus Doyen (b. Sept. 3, 1859, Concord, N.H.-d. Oct. 6, 1918, Quantico, Va.), U.S. Marine Corps general, organized and commanded the 5th Regiment in World War I, and in France took command of the 4th Brigade, 2nd Division. In 1917 he became commanding general, 2nd Division, the first Marine officer to command an Army division. Ill health forced his return to the U.S., but his contribution to the later success of the 4th Brigade was recognized in the posthumous award of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the first to ever be awarded. Two ships have been named U.S.S. Doyen in his honor.
