Biographical History

Lincoln Gordon was Professor of International Economic Relations at the Harvard Business School from 1955-1961. Prior to teaching at Harvard he was the Program vice chairman, Requirements Committee, War Production Board, 1945 and was a consultant to the Atomic Energy Commission, Army and Navy Munitions Board, and U.S. State Department working on the Marshall Plan. He was the US Ambassador to Brazil from 1961-1966, Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs from 1966-1967, and president of Johns Hopkins University from 1967-1971.

Abraham Lincoln Gordon was born in New York in 1913. He attended Harvard, graduating with high honors in 1933 and earned a PhD from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 1936. He taught at Harvard Business School from 1946-1950 and was professor of international economic relations from 1955-1961. He resigned in 1961 to become the ambassador to Brazil under the Kennedy administration. He died near Washington D.C. in 2009.

Lincoln Gordon was the ninth president of The Johns Hopkins University (1967-1971).

He was born in New York City, September 10, 1913. After graduation from Harvard in 1933, he studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and received the Ph. D. in 1936. He returned to the U.S. to begin his teaching career at Harvard. He served on several government boards and was a consultant with the Departments of State and Defense. In September 1961, he was appointed Ambassador to Brazil and in March of 1966, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs. Lincoln Gordon resumed a career in business after resigning his position at Johns Hopkins.
