Biographical History

Stebbing began his education at King's College School and then King's College London. He was awarded a B.A. at Oxford in 1857 and the M.A. in 1857. He was ordained in 1859. After meeting the entomologist William Saunders he became interested in science. He married Saunders's daughter Mary Anne in 1867. Became a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1895, fellow of the Royal Society in 1896, and was awarded the Gold medal of the Linnean Society in 1908. He wrote over 100 papers and two major monographs mainly on the subject of Crustacea. He recieved the collection of Amphipoda from the voyage of the H.M.S Challenger and published his findings on the collection in 1888. He was an early convert to Darwinism and wrote in defense of Darwin's theories.
