Biographical History

Gamma Sigma Delta began at the Ohio State University in 1905 as a professional agricultural fraternity called Delta Theta Sigma. The name was officially changed in 1913 at a conclave. In 1915, the organization merged with the Honor Society of Agriculture, and membership was limited to graduating seniors, graduate students, alumni, and faculty. Members of the international organization petitioned for recognition of a campus chapter at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1954, which was approved in 1955. The installation and first initiation banquet in the history of the North Carolina State University chapter was held on April 28, 1955. After a slow start, the organization grew rapidly and undertook a variety of activities, including honoring achievements of students and faculty, meeting with freshmen during orientation, sponsoring a tutoring program, and participating in the Biennial Conclave. NC State's chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta remains active as of 2008.
