Biographical History

Alec Lawrence Macfie was born on 29 May 1898 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was the son of William G Macfie, United Presbyterian Church Minister, and Alison Macfie, nee Wilson. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow and at the University of Glasgow . He served in the 1914-1918 World War with the 2nd Battalion The Gordon Highlanders between 1917 and 1918. In 1930, he became lecturer in Political Economy at the University of Glasgow and was Professor of Political Economy at the same university 1946-1958 . After his retirement in 1958 he lived in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, until his death in 1980 . Alec Lawrence Macfie was the brother of Major General John Mandeville Macfie ( 1891-1985 ), who was educated at the South African College School, Cape Town, South Africa, the High School of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow. He graduated in 1915. In the same year be became Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He continued his medical career in the army until his retirement in 1952 .
