Biographical History

Ampex is an American electronics company founded in 1944 by Alexander M. Poniatoff. The name AMPEX is an acronym, created by its founder, which stands for Alexander M. Poniatoff Excellence. Florence James was personal secretary and friend to Mr. Poniatoff for many years. She came to Ampex in 1946 as the company's first stenographer. At the time the company had only 25 employees. Both she and Mr. Poniatoff retired in 1970.
