Biographical History

The material in this collection relates to two families from Kentucky, the Kepharts and the Kidwells. Emily Kephart was one of eleven children of Samuel Kephart and Phebe Blackwell of Henry County, Kentucky. Emily married Nathaniel Wilken Kidwell and in 1844 they had one son, Jasper. Nathaniel died that same year and Emily later married Wesley Ross. Emily and her new husband lived in Alto in Howard County, Indiana. Emily's sister, Mary Elizabeth married James Clark, a farmer and they lived in Owen County, Kentucky. During the Civil War Emily's son Jasper served in the 11th Indiana Infantry. Two of Emily's brothers also served during the Civil War in Kentucky units.
